On traditional economy rice storefronts, only the costs and not the names of the dishes are denoted. The ordering process is hence visually-driven, where consumers typically point and order in a fashion of, “Can I have this, plus that and that.”

RICE+’s identity system was driven by this verbal culture and simultaneously inspired by Chinese-script menu boards; the character’s square forms naturally give rise to grid systems where visual efficiency is enhanced.

Building on the aforementioned inspiration of Chinese-script menus, the foundation of the identity developed into square pictographs that observes economy rice’s ordering language. Illustration and lo-fi processes like risoprinting then became intrinsic to the system’s visual language.

+LUCK Party food workshop
In line with RICE+’s spirit of promoting food as nourishment past the dietary, this food-sharing and cooking workshop builds community and self-sustenance in its customers. Two 3-hour sessions were run in June 2026 where potluckers exchanged dishes and stories and at the same time learned a new recipe from a pre-appointed Chef of the day.
